Trivia[]
Sahelanthropus tchadensis is one of the oldest known species in the human family tree. This species lived sometime between 7 and 6 million years ago in West-Central Africa (Chad). Although we have only cranial material from Sahelanthropus, studies so far show this species had a combination of early ape-like and human-like features. Some of these features include a sloping face, very prominent browridges, and elongated skull. Human-like features included small canine teeth, a short middle part of the face, and a spinal cord opening underneath the skull instead of towards the back as seen in non-bipedal apes. However, in 2020, the femur of the species was analyzed, and it was found that Sahelanthropus was not a bipedal animal.[1]
Sahelanthropus tchadensis is an extinct species of the Homininae or the African apes. They were dated to exist about 9 to 7 million years ago, during the Miocene epoch. The species Sahelanthropus, was announced by 2002, mainly based on a partial cranium, nicknamed Toumaï, discovered in northern Chad.[2]
