Poke or Poking is an action performed by pressing the appropriate button when available.
This action is used for collecting items from
Holes To Poke and
Fishing Spots.
While Fishing Spots use the Poke action, when the action is completed successfully, the notice that appears shows that the action is actually spearfishing and uses the same icon as poking.

You have to be close enough to a Hole To Poke or a Fishing Spot for this action to appear.
You must have the correct tool in your hand or the action will not appear. You will need either a
Stick or a
Sharpened Stick for the action to be available. You may have to Switch Hands with the tool for this action to appear.
You then have to press the appropriate button at the correct time for the poking action to be successful. If you are unsuccessful, two things can happen: either you don't apply enough force and the hole to poke remains unchanged or you apply too much force and the poking item is destroyed.
Once successful, 
strip the tool with an empty hand to remove the caught creature.
